Social by Rail

Saturday 20th July 2019

This event involves taking a train to Oakham for lunch and drinks at a couple of pubs (usually including the Grainstore brewery) and then returning by train to Stamford for more drinks in some of Stamford’s many hostelries. The train is then taken to return to Peterborough where what happens depends on how people feel. Usually we have an evening meal either in Stamford of back in Peterborough depending on people’s preferences. A good day if you like beer and social chit chat. There’s also some walking between the pubs.

Meet at Peterborough station about 11:30 in time to buy a ticket and get on the train. The proposed programme (which might change on a whim) is:

11:52 Train P’Boro to Oakham
12:18 Arrive Oakham to eat and drink but not necessarily in that order.
16:46 Train Oakham to Stamford
16:59 Arrive Stamford for more drinks at one or two pubs.
21:00 Train Stamford to P’Boro
21:15 Arrive P’Boro for a meal (if we haven’t eaten in Stamford) and a final drink in the Brewery Tap (if it’s still open) or the Draper’s Arms if you’re still up for it.

Taxis home are probably the order of the day. The train fare is approximately £12.70. Food and beer money is extra!

If you live in Stamford you can meet up with us either on the Oakham train or when we get back to Stamford.

Please contact Alan to let him know you are coming.

Weekend Away in Portugal

Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th October 2019

This trip to the amazing Costa Vicentina in Portugal will take place in the first weekend of October 2019 (Thurs 3rd – Sun 6th October). The idea is to fly to Faro (Algarve) rent cars and drive to Aljezur a small village in the heart of the Natural park of Costa Vicentina (about one hour drive on the highway). Costa Vicentina is in the South–West Coast of Portugal, partially located in the infamous Algarve, but in an area of outstanding beauty and wild coast and much less touristy. We will be walking sections of the Rota Vicentina, a major trail that runs along the coast for 230 km in south-western Portugal along the most beautiful and best-preserved coastline of Southern Europe. Rota Vicentina.

Coastal buses don't work on weekends so we are looking into a mix of circular walks and maybe a long one along the coast with some kind of transfer.

We have reserved 3 double rooms, 1 triple room and a bed in a mix dorm at the Carpe Diem Aljezur Hostel for 3 nights (3 Thursday-6 Sunday, October 2019).

Alexandra has also booked rooms at another hostel which is the Amazigh Aljezur and we will decide which hostel best suits our needs once we know who is coming.

We plan to fly by Easyjet from Luton to Faro: Out Thurs Depart 17:30 Arrive 20:25; Return Sun Depart 20.55 Arrive 23:45.

On arrival at Faro, we will hire cars.

These are small hostels and do not provide meals, but there's a nice kitchen and plenty of shops around to buy stuff to make breakfast and sandwiches for the walks. There's also lovely local coffee shops and others that we can stop at on our way to the walk and have a toastie and a café–aux–lait. A continental breakfast costs about £3. There's no English breakfasts in these coffee shops though but plenty of delicious stuff. There are many restaurants in Aljezur that we can walk to in the evening. They vary quite in type of food and prices going from £5 to max £25. We can have a good meal for £10.

We will be walking on Friday and Saturday, and maybe a shorter one on Sunday if people are keen.

The cost will be £210 which covers flights, mileage to Luton, airport parking, car hire in Portugal, motorway tolls and 3 nights hostel accommodation. A checked in 15kg bag will be £23.24 extra, or a 23kg bag £26.61. Meals will be extra.

You will need to take out your own travel insurance.

If you would like to come on this trip, please complete the booking form at the end of the newsletter and send to Andy together with a non–returnable deposit of £110 plus £24 if you would like to check in a 15kg bag (£27 for a 23kg bag) by Sunday 3rd March, following which we will book the flights.

The balance of the cost will be required by 4th August.

Greyhound Racing

Friday 8th November 2019

Why not join us for a night at the Peterborough dog racing track? For this visit we will be booking into the restaurant for a meal overlooking the race track where any flutters that you might want to make on the doggies will be placed for you (minimum stake £1). The cost will be around £16.00 (to be confirmed nearer the time) which includes entry, a race card and a two course meal. The bar opens at 6:30pm and you have to take up your restaurant place by 8:00pm. For further details click here .
