Easter in the Lake District

Friday 30th March to Monday 2nd April 2018

walk walk Moderate

We have booked 8 beds at the YHA Wasdale Hall, which is a 19th century country manor every bit as grand as its name would suggest. This delightful accommodation in Cumbria is often cited as a favourite hostel due to the impressive nature of the building, not to mention its breath–taking view, which has even been named “Britain's Favourite View”. Set right on the shore of Wastwater, the deepest lake in England, from the hostel you can see the expanse of the lake plus the awe–inspiring mountains beyond. YHA Wasdale Hall really is a stunning rural retreat – you won't find any mobile phone signal or Wi–Fi here, so this location is perfect for getting away from the pressures of everyday life and relaxing in some beautiful surroundings. The hostel is licensed and has a self-catering kitchen.

We will travel up on Friday leaving at approx. 9am and travel back Monday afternoon. The cost will be £114.75 (see booking form for options) which covers accommodation on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and breakfast on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Packed lunches are available for an extra £5.75 each. Proposals for evening meals will be discussed at the time; options being a two–course meal in the hostel at £9.95 or a trip to one of the two pubs 2 miles away. If you wish to self–cater the cost will be £96. Mileage costs will be in the order of £35. Non-members are subject to an additional payment of £3.

You need to send a completed booking form (to be found in the Newsletter) to Alan by Sunday 18th March to book your place.

If you don’t fancy the Youth Hostel why not look into booking your own accommodation locally.

Social by Rail

Saturday 14th July 2018

This event involves taking a train to Oakham for lunch and drinks at a couple of pubs (usually including the Grainstore brewery) and then returning by train to Stamford for more drinks in some of Stamford’s many hostelries. The train is then taken to return to Peterborough where what happens depends on how people feel. Usually we have an evening meal either in Stamford of back in Peterborough depending on people’s preferences. A good day if you like beer and social chit chat. There’s also some walking between the pubs.

Meet at Peterborough station about 11:30 in time to buy a ticket and get on the train. The proposed programme (which might change on a whim) is:

11:52 Train P’Boro to Oakham
12:18 Arrive Oakham to eat and drink but not necessarily in that order.
16:46 Train Oakham to Stamford
16:59 Arrive Stamford for more drinks at one or two pubs.
21:00 Train Stamford to P’Boro
21:15 Arrive P’Boro for a meal (if we haven’t eaten in Stamford) and a final drink in the Brewery Tap (if it’s still open) or the Draper’s Arms if you’re still up for it.

Taxis home are probably the order of the day. The train fare is approximately £12.70. Food and beer money is extra!

If you live in Stamford you can meet up with us either on the Oakham train or when we get back to Stamford.

Please contact Alan to let him know you are coming.

Weekend Away in Northern Ireland

Thursday 13th/Friday 14th to Monday 17th September 2018

walk walk Moderate

This is a trip to the Emerald Isle for spectacular coastal walking along the world–famous area of outstanding natural beauty that is the North Antrim coast which includes the Giant's Causeway. Inland there are the Glens of Antrim countryside and “Dark Hedges”. (Ask a Game of Thrones fan). The modern award–winning youth hostel has free WIFI and is located in Bushmills – the small town famous for the whiskey distillery.

The walks will be easy to moderate and although coast walks are linear there is the Causeway Rambler Bus Service which runs until the end of September stopping at ten points between Coleraine, Portrush and Carrick–a–rede.

Flying from Stanstead to Belfast International we will pick up a hire car for the 1½ mile journey to Bushmills.

We are undecided yet whether to go for 3 or 4 nights; so at the moment we are leaving it open to see what your preferences are; we could even have two parties, some going for 3 nights and some for 4. There is a question in the booking form for you to indicate your preference.

Accommodation will be in 4– or 6–bed ensuite rooms at £18 per person per night. There are a limited number of 2– or 3–bed ensuite rooms at £57 per night.

The cost of the weekend will be approximately £245 for 4 nights or £215 for 3 nights not including meals or drinks. A non-refundable deposit of £104 will be required to book the flights (including a 23kg suit case).

Flight Times:

Outbound

  1. Depart Stanstead 12:20
  2. Arrive Belfast International 13.35

Return

  1. Dep Belfast International 14.05
  2. Arrive Stanstead 15:20

You will need to arrange your own travel insurance.

Please send a completed booking form (to be found at the end of the latest newsletter) to Andy by 11th March if you would like to come with a non–returnable deposit of £104. Balance to be paid by 12th August.
